At Wilhelm Family Vineyards, we specialize in Spanish wine. The complex soil at our Sonoita winery is well-suited for growing varietals from the La Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions of Spain. From full-bodied reds to refreshing whites, we have wines to please every palate.
Here are some of our Spanish varietals:
Tempranillo is the most popular grape variety in the La Rioja wine region. The name for the Tempranillo grape comes from the Spanish word temprano
(early) because it ripens sooner than other types of Spanish red grapes. This varietal is known for its signature leather notes and also features flavors of black cherry and black plum. Our winery offers a 2011 Tempranillo Gran Reserva
as well as a 2012 Tempranillo Gran Reserva
is a Spanish red wine grape that produces wine with a deep red color and a pleasantly intense aroma. Because Graciano ages wonderfully, it is often used for Gran Reservas. This is the level of La Rioja wine that ages for the longest. To be classified as a Gran Reserva, a wine must age for a minimum of two years in oak.
Garnacha grapes, also called Grenache in some regions, are a popular red wine grape variety that is believed to have originated in Spain. This varietal has low tannins and thin skin, which makes it an excellent grape for rosados. Garnacha rosé wine
features red grapefruit, green apple, and peach notes. It is a refreshing choice to pair with tapas, savory quiches, or citrus-based salads.
, spelled Alvarinho in Portuguese, is a white wine grape. Its name comes from the Galacian word albar
(white). This Spanish wine varietal has refreshing stone fruit and zesty citrus notes. It is an excellent pairing for seafood including fish, ceviche, and scampi.
is not as well-known as some of our other Spanish varietals, but it is a lovely wine that just may be your new favorite. It is a light-bodied and refreshing white wine with tropical notes of citrus blossom, lychee, and banana on the nose as well as jasmine and fennel notes that add structure. Verdejo ages beautifully in the bottle and begins to develop toasted nut flavors over time.
